How I got my start
"Labor Day weekend of 1989 I was asked to help my brother-in-law with a flooring job for two weeks. Twenty-Seven years later, I am still installing floors and love watching my customer’s happy reactions to their new floors. Although we have a successful commercial business, we continue installing residential flooring and completing full-home remodels, because the ear-to-ear smiles of our customers never gets old.
I wanted to be part of the flooring trade, so I joined the union, where I worked successfully for many years. Unfortunately, a knee injury kept me from working full time with the union. After two surgeries and a lot of physical therapy, I am back. However, going back to the union was not an option for me – with the economic downturn of 2007, there were no jobs available to a middle-aged man. My wife always says, “When life hands you a bag of lemons, make lemonade” so, that is what I did. I dove head first into the world of small business, and I will never look back.
During my 27 years as a flooring installer, I have been a volunteer firefighter and EMT in my community. For the past 14 years I served as fire chief; in May, I will proudly be retiring from my position, but I will continue to serve the people in my community." - Charlie Lewis
